- The OCIF warned of fraudulent communications using its official phone number
- The agency recommended not answering suspicious calls and instead contacting it directly
- Citizens are urged to report any attempted fraud to the authorities
The Office of the Commissioner of Financial Institutions (OCIF) warned on Wednesday about possible fraudulent communications using the agency’s official phone number to deceive citizens and obtain confidential information. Commissioner Mónica Rodríguez Villa urged the public to be alert to calls, text messages, or other contacts that appear to come from the entity and request personal or financial data.
Rodríguez Villa clarified that the office does not call citizens to inform them that their bank accounts have been compromised. The agency’s official number is (787) 723-3131, but the OCIF warned that third parties could be using it improperly to make fraudulent communications. The OCIF recommended not answering suspicious calls appearing to come from this number and instead contacting the agency directly through its official line to clarify any doubts.
The agency offered several recommendations to avoid becoming a victim of fraud and urged citizens to report any attempted fraud to the corresponding authorities. Rodríguez Villa reiterated that protecting citizens and the integrity of Puerto Rico’s financial system are priorities for the office, and asked the public to remain vigilant against possible identity theft attempts.
