July 25: A Date Divided by Status

Published Jul 25, 2026 · via El Vocero

The 25th of July marks 74 years since the proclamation of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. For the Popular Democratic Party leadership, this date represents the greatest constitutional achievement of Puerto Rico.

In contrast, for statehood supporters, it serves as a reminder of a formula that did not complete political equality. Meanwhile, for independence and non-traditional sectors, it is evidence that the country still lacks sufficient powers to address its daily problems.

The date remains divided by the issue of Puerto Rico's status.
