Why this exists

787daily started from a simple problem: there was almost no way to follow Puerto Rico's news in English. If you don't read Spanish fluently (whether you're part of the diaspora, a recent arrival, family of someone on the island, or just someone who cares about Puerto Rico), the day's reporting was effectively out of reach.

It has grown into much more than the news: a way into the island itself. Is the water on in your sector today? Which coast is divable this week? How long is the sail to Culebra, which trail suits a Sunday with the kids, what is a town really like to live in? The answer should be one page away, in plain English, with its source.

What we are

Most of our news is curation and translation: a short English summary of a story first reported in Spanish by outlets like El Nuevo Día, Primera Hora, NotiCel, the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo and other reputable Puerto Rico newsrooms. We do not reproduce their articles in full. The reporting is theirs; each summary says so, names the outlet under the headline and links to the original.

We also publish our own reporting: analysis built from public records and official data on water, power, contracts, earthquakes and the weekend, and longer pieces we report ourselves. Those are labeled "787daily · Original analysis" or carry the byline "By 787daily", so you can always tell the two apart. Our editorial standards explain both.

How it works

Each summary is drafted with AI from a story Puerto Rico's press reported, checked against the original before it runs, and linked back to it. Our own reports are built from public records and official data. How we work has the details, including what AI does and does not do here.
