The Instituto Coreográfico Interamericano (ICI) is bringing the Men Who Dance Global Workshop to Puerto Rico from August 7 to 9, offering free workshops and masterclasses to promote male dance. Rafi Maldonado López, ICI's artistic director, aims to normalize the presence of men in dance, which he believes has been a challenge due to stereotypes and lack of information.
The event will take place at the School for the Performing Arts in Guaynabo and will include an audition to select a representative from Puerto Rico for the next Men Who Dance festival. Maldonado López, a native of Guaynabo, hopes to start a conversation with Puerto Rican dance teachers and company directors to collaborate on developing male dancers.
A meeting with dance leaders will be held on August 6 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss how the ICI can support them. The ICI director believes that Puerto Rico has great dance talent that needs coordination to gain more visibility.
