La Borinqueña, a Puerto Rican superheroine created by novelist Edgardo Miranda Rodríguez, celebrates 10 years of fighting for environmental and social justice in Puerto Rico. To commemorate this milestone, a group of renowned artists have designed 10 special covers for the re-edition of her first comic book. La Borinqueña, born in New York and studying at Columbia University, is an Afro-Puerto Rican heroine who defends Puerto Rico with the help of a group of superheroes inspired by the island's culture and Taino mythology.
The comic book's re-edition will be released at the New York Comic Con, which will take place from October 8 to 11, with 500 copies featuring the new covers. Miranda Rodríguez created La Borinqueña to highlight Puerto Rico's problems, including its public debt, and to represent all women. The character's design and message have resonated with the public, who appreciate her nationalist and connected-to-reality persona.
