Between 2021 and August 2026, Puerto Rico recorded 263 homicides of women, of which 128 (48.7%) were classified as femicides, the Instituto de Estadísticas de Puerto Rico (IEPR) confirmed Wednesday while presenting the latest data from its Sistema de Compilación y Manejo de Estadísticas de Feminicidios. Of those femicides, 119 (93.0%) were classified as intimate or family-related, meaning the aggressor was the victim's partner or a relative.
The update covers cases reported in the first eight months of the year and adds new indicators allowing users to consult the annual total of femicides, as well as cases in which the homicide was followed by the aggressor's suicide. It also includes a new infographic on femicides recorded between 2021 and 2025, covering the victims' profile and the mechanism of death, among other variables, and a redesigned interface to make the data easier to search and understand.
Mariluz Bezares Salinas, Statistical Projects Manager at the Instituto de Estadísticas, said the data remind us that femicidal violence continues to claim lives in Puerto Rico and that addressing it requires a sustained response. She said continuing to collect and analyze information helps identify patterns and associated factors, and that further research allows for more effective ways to prevent and respond to these situations.
