In Puerto Rico, Camuy Mayor Gabriel Hernández, who also chairs the Federation of Mayors, called on the New Progressive Party (PNP) to reflect on its approach ahead of upcoming elections. Hernández emphasized that the party must understand that elections are won from the municipalities upwards, not from the capital, Fortaleza, downwards. He suggested that the PNP should explain its accomplishments over the past four years to the people and ensure it has strong candidates in each municipality.
Hernández also advocated for a smaller central government, proposing that more powers be given to municipalities and that responsibilities be reduced for central government agencies. He cited the example of the Department of Recreation and Sports, which he described as bureaucratic, and suggested consolidating agencies and transferring services such as school maintenance and waste collection to municipalities, which could generate income for them. This approach, he believes, would lead to greater efficiency and reduced costs.
