The 11-year-old daughter of Aurea Vazquez Rijos, who is serving a life sentence for orchestrating the murder of her Canadian husband Adam Anhang, has requested that a federal court in Puerto Rico assign a lawyer to her mother so she can have a new trial. The request, signed by the girl’s grandmother and legal guardian Carmen Rijos, was denied on Friday by Judge Maria Antongiorgi Jordan due to lack of active controversy.
Vazquez Rijos was convicted in 2019, along with her sister Marcia and Marcia’s ex-partner Jose Ferrer Sosa, for the 2005 murder. The case involved a prenuptial agreement that would have given Vazquez Rijos $8 million if Anhang had died, but only $3,000 per month for three years if they divorced. The prosecution alleged that the defendants hired a hitman, Alex 'El Loco' Pabon Colon, to commit the crime.
Vazquez Rijos fled to Italy to avoid prosecution and was not arrested until 2013, when she visited Spain. The girl making the request was born in 2015 while Vazquez Rijos was in a Madrid prison, and is now living with her grandmother in San Juan.
