On October 24, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will collect expired, unused, or unwanted prescription medications at 30 sites across Puerto Rico from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM as part of the 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event aims to prevent misuse of these medications. Michael Mayer, special agent in charge of the DEA’s Caribbean Division, urged people to review their medicine cabinets and remove unused medications, citing the risk they pose to children, seniors, and others.
Tablets, capsules, patches, and other prescription medication forms will be accepted, as well as sealed liquids like syrups. Needles, syringes, and illicit drugs will not be accepted. Participants will not need to provide personal information to drop off medications.
The DEA reported that over 4,000 pounds of medications were collected in Puerto Rico in April 2026, and that since April 2024, these events have collectively gathered 68,455 pounds of medications in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
