A 61-year-old man shot his 49-year-old ex-partner Monday morning inside the medical office in Villalba where she works, then took his own life at the scene. Police identified the shooter as Ángel Javier Colón Torres, who arrived at the office that morning as a patient and opened fire while the woman was taking his vital signs.
Police Inspector Daniel Justiniano said that, according to the investigation and interviews, the woman ended the relationship roughly three months ago and had expressed her intention to go to authorities over his behavior; the inspector said Colón Torres was pressuring her and constantly stalking her, and the victim was planning to file for a protective order. The woman was shot in the head, taken first to the Menonita hospital in Ponce and then to the Centro Médico in Río Piedras in delicate condition.
Colón Torres was married to another woman and worked as a school bus driver and tow truck operator. Family members said the relationship lasted about a year and a half and that both families knew each other; the man’s wife arrived at the scene. Patients and employees fled the office and took refuge in a nearby church.
