Para la Naturaleza Invites Puerto Rico Residents to Plant 40,000 Trees on October 24

Why this matters: Para la Naturaleza says a tree canopy can cut temperatures by up to 10 degrees in planted areas, a cooling effect for island neighborhoods facing heat during warm months.

The nonprofit Para la Naturaleza has called on the public to take part in the Día de La Siembra on Saturday, October 24, a reforestation drive to plant more than 40,000 trees distributed across several Puerto Rico towns during October. The call is open to individuals, families, schools and organizations planting alone or in groups, especially those who received trees at distribution events and have not yet planted them.

During October the organization handed out native, endemic and fruit tree species grown in its nurseries to increase forest cover and restore natural systems. Through the Siembra Sombra initiative, part of the educational campaign La Siembra, the group promotes reforestation to lower temperatures, saying trees can reduce heat by up to 10 degrees in the areas where they are planted.

President Fernando Lloveras San Miguel thanked participants, saying the turnout of families, schools, communities and organizations shows a genuine commitment to restoring natural systems and creating cooler spaces. The effort has been supported by community and environmental groups, educational institutions, private companies and towns including Ponce, Juana Díaz, Caguas, Bayamón, Fajardo, Humacao, Luquillo, Manatí, Río Grande, Yabucoa and San Juan.

Participants are asked to document their plantings on social media tagging @paralanaturaleza and log each tree on the campaign’s digital map, which also offers planting and tree-care guidance at pln.org/lasiembra.
