The 49-year-old woman wounded in a shooting inside a medical office on Puerto Rico’s road PR-547, kilometer 2.5, in the Aceituna neighborhood of Villalba, continues to fight for her life at the Hospital de Trauma, according to Dr. Regino Colón Alsina, executive director of the Medical Services Administration (ASEM). In a press statement, Colón Alsina said her care and medical condition have remained unchanged in recent days, under continuous monitoring and specialized management by a multidisciplinary team, and noted ASEM is safeguarding patient privacy under HIPAA.

The attack occurred Monday, October 19, around 8:06 AM. A 9-1-1 call received about 8:38 AM alerted the Puerto Rico Police Bureau to gunfire at the scene. Officers found Ángel J. Torres Colón, 61, who took his own life there, and the wounded woman, who was first taken by ambulance to a hospital and then transferred to the Centro Médico in Río Piedras.

ASEM medical director Israel Ayala said the patient is admitted to the trauma service, receiving treatment from consulted specialists, while a medical team evaluates her for neurological damage. The Ponce Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC) Homicide Division, together with prosecutor Melissa Rodríguez, is investigating the case as loved ones ask for prayers for her recovery.
