Governor Jenniffer González Colón announced a project to create permanent spaces for artisans to display and sell their work at Paseo de Ballajá Garden in Old San Juan. The project will provide facilities for 15 artisans who currently take part in the artisan market on the grounds of the Ballajá Barracks, replacing temporary tents with permanent structures designed to complement the historic surroundings, with exhibition areas and improved pedestrian circulation.
González Colón said the goal is to give artisans more comfortable and suitable spaces to showcase their talent, sell their creations and grow their businesses, noting that artisans keep Puerto Rico’s traditions alive and contribute to economic development. Plans also include improvements to the garden itself, such as shaded areas, landscaping and upgrades to public spaces.
Willianette Robles Cancel, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, said the project supports the agency’s efforts to promote cultural tourism and expand development opportunities for local artisans, adding that better facilities will help market local products and promote Puerto Rican talent among residents and visitors. Officials expect the initiative to contribute to the revitalization of Paseo de Ballajá Garden and expand Old San Juan’s cultural and tourism offerings while highlighting the island’s traditions and local craftsmanship.
