Castillo San Cristóbal

Old San Juan

Known for: the largest Spanish fort in the Americas

Castillo San Cristóbal is the largest Spanish fortification ever built in the Americas, raised through the 18th century to defend San Juan from a land assault — complementing El Morro's command of the sea. Its layered system of walls, moats, ramps, tunnels, and outlying defenses once covered much of the city's eastern approach.

Part of the UNESCO-listed San Juan National Historic Site, it sits above Old San Juan with sweeping views of the coast and the colorful old city. Visitors can explore the maze of tunnels, the troops' quarters, and the iconic sentry box known as the Garita del Diablo. A single National Park Service ticket is shared with El Morro a short walk away.
