Sebastián Negrón Reichard resigned as Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), effective at noon on May 26, telling Governor Jenniffer González Colón that the position requires mutual trust and respect for the authority the law confers on the Secretary — and that "that trust no longer exists." In his resignation, Negrón Reichard said that after he reported the findings of an evaluation of a competitive contracting process to the corresponding authorities, subsequent actions by La Fortaleza made it impossible to continue exercising the role with the integrity and autonomy it demands. He specifically objected to interventions by other officials in areas delegated by law to the Secretary, including the reversal of two summary suspensions he had issued based on the evaluation's findings.
More than 10 officials in DDEC leadership roles resigned as a result of the same circumstances, among them the agency's general counsel, its chief financial officer (serving both DDEC and PRIDCO), the chief of personnel, the communications director, the lead strategist for reshoring and semiconductors, and the director of the Office of Incentives for Business — the division responsible for administering Act 60 tax decrees. The matters he reported remain under review by the Department of Justice, the Office of the Comptroller, the Government Ethics Office, and DDEC's own human resources office.
