The Department of Public Safety has activated the tsunami monitoring protocol for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake was registered north of Venezuela. As a precautionary measure, people in the water, beaches, marinas, or coastal areas are advised to leave the water immediately and stay away from the shore until authorities confirm there is no danger.
The public is warned not to approach the sea, not to go observe changes in water levels, and to stay tuned to official information. The Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management, the Puerto Rico Seismic Network, and response agencies are monitoring the situation and will issue official updates as necessary.
The public is also reminded to use 911 only for real emergencies.
