The Department of Housing presented three relocation alternatives to the residents of Juana Matos in Cataño: moving to a non-floodable land in Toa Baja with other neighbors, receiving a $200,000 voucher for another home, or requesting a property in urbanizations being built by the agency across the island. Over 130 residents attended the meeting, led by Housing Secretary Luis Martínez Román, where he stated that the community wants to maintain their unity but acknowledges the flooding problem in the area.
The meeting was a result of the community's insistence, with the goal of impacting around 300 families through the Multisectoral Program for Community Mitigation. Pedro Carrión, a community leader, expressed satisfaction with the meeting, emphasizing the need for the community to know their options.
The Subsecretary of the Office of Disaster Recovery, Carlos Olmedo Álvarez, presented the options and stated that the Housing Department is advancing in the process of acquiring the former Sabana Seca naval base in Toa Baja, with 187 families having favored this option last year.
