Last Days of Amnesty: DTOP Exceeds Goal for Traffic Ticket Payments with Discount

Updated Jun 30, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

The Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) has collected $71 million in payments from citizens, exceeding its initial goal of $60 million, through the 40% discount on traffic tickets. As of Tuesday, 10,376,237 tickets had been paid, totaling $71,070,337. DTOP Secretary Edwin González Montalvo stated that the amnesty has already surpassed initial figures and expects to exceed $75 million by the end of June.

The 40% discount period, available since March through Law 1 of 2026, ends on July 10. Although the collected amount is still below the $169 million estimated by the Office of Budget and Legislative Analysis (OPAL), González Montalvo noted that the DTOP's estimate was based on previous amnesty experiences. The discount applies to tickets under the Traffic Law, administrative fines related to AutoExpreso tolls, and eligible fines associated with driver's licenses.

The OPAL estimated that the accumulated debt from these fines was $560.5 million, with $315.7 million in principal and $244.8 million in surcharges. González Montalvo urged citizens with eligible fines to take advantage of the discount, including principal, surcharges, and interest.
