Updated Jul 3, 2026 · via Primera Hora

The United States confirmed its status as a favorite to win the FIBA U17 World Cup by defeating Puerto Rico 149-82 in the quarterfinals. The US team achieved the highest offensive production in the tournament's history, making 64.4% of their field goal attempts and dominating the rebounds 65-28. Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje led the US attack with 31 points and 16 rebounds, while NaVorro Bowman Jr. and Cayden Daughtry added 19 points each. Puerto Rico, which had reached the quarterfinals for the first time in its history, struggled to contain the US team's offense from the start.

The US team's depth allowed them to maintain constant pressure throughout the 40 minutes, increasing their lead. Dwight Gaines was Puerto Rico's top scorer with 24 points, including seven three-pointers. Despite converting 15 three-pointers, Puerto Rico had a difficult time in attack, making only 33.7% of their field goal attempts. The US team's collective attack, with 45 assists in 56 baskets, proved too much for Puerto Rico.

Although they lost, Puerto Rico achieved its best performance in a FIBA U17 World Cup, finishing among the top eight teams in the world. They will still play classification matches to determine their final position between fifth and eighth place.
