Puerto Rico Treasury Pays Over $27 Million in Refundable Credits to Seniors and Pensioners

Puerto Rico's Fortaleza announced that the Department of Treasury (Hacienda) issued its first payroll of refundable tax credits for low-income seniors (65+) and pensioners, totaling $27,742,430, covering 59,592 processed returns. Governor Jenniffer González said these are the first payments since the Form 481.1 'senior return' became available July 2, and urged eligible citizens to apply via the SURI platform or at scheduled Service Fairs across the island. Pantoja Rodríguez reported 75,202 credit returns filed in the first five days of the period ending October 14, with about 190,000 returns expected in total; claims must be filed electronically. Over 1,000 people were served at Service Fairs in Bayamón, Ceiba and Caguas, with staff visiting Humacao that Wednesday. Applicants need photo ID and Social Security recipients must present Form SSA-1099.

Separately, $481.5 million in Relief Checks have been approved for 710,383 taxpayers, with an October 15 filing deadline for extensions. For 2025 income tax refunds, $2,324,833,377 has been paid to 1,114,855 taxpayers, versus $2,176,025,633 to 1,092,089 taxpayers for 2024—a $148,807,723 increase covering 22,766 more returns.
