Updated Jul 12, 2026 · via Primera Hora

Abimelec Ortiz, a Puerto Rican player, will make his Major League Baseball debut with the Washington Nationals on Sunday against the New York Yankees. Ortiz was called up from Triple A earlier in the day and will bat third and serve as the designated hitter.

He had a solid season with the Rochester Red Wings, hitting .235 with 16 home runs, 48 runs scored, 59 RBIs, 31 walks, and an .813 OPS. The 24-year-old player joined the Nationals organization during the past winter as part of a trade that sent MacKenzie Gore to the Texas Rangers.

Ortiz's debut adds him to the list of Puerto Rican players making their MLB debuts this season, including Elmer Rodríguez-Cruz, Eduardo Rivera, Edwin Arroyo, and Bryan Torres.
