The National Meteorological Service (SNM) has issued a heat warning for coastal and urban areas in Puerto Rico from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meteorologist María Novoa stated that high temperatures will continue until at least Wednesday, with moderate to high concentrations of Sahara dust affecting the region. Novoa recommended that people with asthma or sensitivity to dust follow their doctor's instructions and take necessary precautions.
The dust concentrations may decrease on Thursday but are expected to increase again on Friday. Under these conditions, rain activity will be limited, with possible isolated showers in western Puerto Rico during the afternoon. Novoa also warned of a high risk of forest fires due to the hot, dry, and windy environment, and advised people to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
Additionally, she cautioned against leaving children or pets in parked vehicles and urged people to check on vulnerable family members and neighbors. The SNM also reported a moderate risk of marine currents on the north and east coasts of Puerto Rico, including Culebra, and warned of rough seas that could complicate navigation, especially for small boats.
