The newly created Institute of Sexual Wellbeing, founded by Josie Edmée, the only certified sexuality counselor in Puerto Rico by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), has launched with two continuing education courses for health professionals. The institute aims to address the lack of education on human sexuality and provide evidence-based information to professionals and the community.
Edmée, who has studies in Counseling, Health, and Sexuality Education from the University of Michigan, noted that many programs in health, nursing, counseling, education, or psychology lack universal standards for teaching human sexuality, resulting in graduates without adequate preparation and patients leaving consultations without answers. The two available courses are 'Lack of Sexual Desire: Understanding the Most Common Sexual Complication' and 'Sexual Health', which provide professionals with tools to evaluate and address sexual health issues.
The institute plans to expand its education to the community and families in the future.
