According to Naydik Ramos Montesinos, director of the Cybercrime Investigation Unit of the Department of Justice, scams are on the rise, mainly affecting older adults. Scammers use various tactics, including fake videos on TikTok, messages about court citations, and emails pretending to be from banks. To avoid falling victim, Ramos Montesinos recommends not clicking on suspicious messages and not deleting any evidence if already a victim.
She also warned that scammers are using artificial intelligence to improve their tactics. During a press conference at La Fortaleza, Ramos Montesinos provided examples of common scams, including fake messages about debt collection and blocked bank cards. She advised people to contact their banks directly and not to provide personal information over the phone.
Ramos Montesinos emphasized that tribunals in Puerto Rico do not send citations via text messages and that people should be cautious when receiving unexpected messages or calls.
