George Lombard Jr. made a memorable MLB debut, hitting a home run in his second at-bat to help the New York Yankees defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0. At 21 years and 63 days old, Lombard became the sixth youngest player to debut for the Yankees since 1985 and the second youngest shortstop in that span, after Derek Jeter.
Lombard's 392-foot home run gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead. He also helped pitcher Ryan Weathers by starting double plays in the third and fifth innings. Additionally, Puerto Rican outfielder Heliot Ramos made his Yankees debut, going 0-for-5, and fellow Puerto Rican Fernando Cruz pitched in relief, earning his 18th hold of the season and lowering his ERA to 2.76.
The Yankees' David Bednar earned his 25th save of the season, pitching 1.1 innings and striking out three.
