Genera PR, the company in charge of electricity generation in Puerto Rico, updated the conditions for providing electricity on Thursday after several weeks of energy problems. The unit #5 of the Costa Sur power plant is now operational, adding 410 megawatts of capacity, but unit #6 is still being repaired. Genera PR stated that their teams successfully restored unit 5 to the system, which is crucial for the stability of the generation system.
The company will continue to monitor its behavior in the coming hours. LUMA Energy, in charge of distribution and transmission, expects to have a reserve of 152 megawatts during peak hours, considered a 'narrow' reserve. Genera PR explained that while demand is fully covered, an unexpected event could lead to insufficient capacity.
The company acknowledged the frustration of customers who lose power and emphasized their role in informing about the situation and its impact on operations.
