Judge Yahaira López Mercado of the Guayama Court determined that there was probable cause for the arrest of Luciano García Colón, a 60-year-old resident of Patillas, on charges of aggravated illegal appropriation and identity theft. According to the investigation by Agent Carlos Rodríguez Colón, on March 9, the complainant visited his accountant to file his income tax return.
The accountant discovered that García Colón had filed a tax return with the complainant's information on February 27, 2026, and collected a refund of $1,034, which was deposited into a bank account. The police clarified that the accountant is a witness in the case and was not involved in the fraud.
García Colón was jailed at the Las Cucharas Correctional Complex in Ponce after failing to post a $7,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 10.
