The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami is monitoring two tropical waves in the Atlantic with potential for cyclonic development in the coming days. The first wave has a 20% chance of organization, while the second, which has not yet left Africa, has a 40% chance. The first wave is located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands and may experience gradual development early to mid-week as it moves west across the central tropical Atlantic.
However, upper-level winds are expected to become less favorable for development by the end of the week as the system approaches the Lesser Antilles. The second system, expected to move off the west coast of Africa early this week, may have more development potential due to favorable environmental conditions. A tropical depression could form during the second half of the week as the system moves west across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.
August is one of the most active months of the hurricane season, but this year, fewer systems are expected to form due to the presence of wind shear in the Atlantic basin.
