Puerto Rican cyclist Abner González was hospitalized after a fall during the final stage of the 'Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta' on Sunday, suffering rib fractures and a pneumothorax, according to his team, Feirense-Beeceler. González was in relatively good condition and under medical observation. The accident occurred when he was in 11th place in the general classification, 12 minutes and 46 seconds behind the leader, French cyclist Alexis Guérin.

As a result, González was forced to abandon the race. He had recently represented Puerto Rico in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, finishing seventh in the time trial event. González joined the Portuguese club in April after his previous team, Illes Balears Arabay, decided not to compete in 2026 as a UCI Continental team.

The Feirense-Beeceler team reported on Monday that González is continuing his recovery, but did not provide further details on his condition or medical treatment.
