The president of the Negociado de Energía envisions a transformation of Puerto Rico's electric system starting in 2027. Currently, the island's energy matrix is largely the same as it was 25 years ago, with an outdated production fleet heavily reliant on petroleum-derived fuels.
Despite promises of a more reliable, clean, and affordable system, progress has been elusive. Exceptions include renewable farms developed in the early 2010s and solar energy from 200,000 net metering customers.
