Why this matters: The potential alliance between UPR and Israel could lead to new academic and research opportunities for Puerto Rican students and faculty, potentially boosting the island’s education and economy.

The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) President Zayira Jordán Condé announced possible academic, research, and exchange opportunities with Israel after meeting with Israeli Consul in Miami, Zuri Siso. The meeting was condemned by student representatives, who questioned Jordán Condé’s ability to meet with the consul but not with the university community. Siso visited the island from August 20 and met with Governor Jenniffer González Colón and House of Representatives President Carlos 'Johnny' Méndez.

Jordán Condé stated that the meeting was exploratory and no agreements or commitments were made. Student representatives, including Tanairy Delgado Pérez, president of the General Student Council (CGE) at the Mayagüez University Campus (RUM), criticized Jordán Condé’s actions.
