Keily Maisonet Ortiz, a Puerto Rican woman, has been sentenced to two years of probation for committing marriage fraud to help a Uzbekistan citizen, Shokir Kurbonovich Khalilov, obtain US citizenship. Maisonet Ortiz will also have to pay a $200 fine. The sentence was imposed by Judge María Antongiorgi Jordán of the US District Court in Hato Rey.
Maisonet Ortiz had reached a plea agreement with the federal prosecution. Kurbonovich Khalilov was also sentenced to time served in prison after pleading guilty under a similar agreement. According to the charges, the two got married in San Juan on March 13, 2024, and subsequently filed immigration petitions.
The investigation was conducted by the US Border Patrol's Ramey Sector, based in Puerto Rico, and marks the first marriage fraud case investigated by this division.
