Violent crime (homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault): 3,137, down 2.2% year over year. Homicides: 245 through June, up 8.9% from 225 a year earlier; the deadliest month so far was May with 48.
Police-reported Type I crime through June 2026 totaled 9,856 incidents, down 2.1% from 10,063 a year earlier, and violent crime overall fell 2.2% to 3,137. Most categories declined: vehicle thefts dropped 17%, rapes fell 17.1%, robberies were down 5.1%, and aggravated assaults and larcenies each slipped modestly. Burglaries edged up 0.6%. The exception is homicides, which rose 8.9% to 245 from 225, with May the deadliest month at 48. That increase is concentrated enough to stand out against an otherwise downward trend across the other categories.
San Juan recorded the most incidents of any municipio, 2,166, and also the highest rate per 10,000 residents at 64.4, meaning its share of crime isn’t just a function of being the largest city. Bayamón (903 incidents, 49.5 per 10,000) and Carolina (749 incidents, 49.2 per 10,000) show similar rates despite Bayamón’s higher raw count, while Caguas and Ponce report both lower totals and lower per-resident rates. These figures reflect incidents reported to police, not survey-based victimization data, so they capture what was recorded rather than the full picture of crime experienced.
