Study of 'Forever Chemicals' in Puerto Rico's Rivers and Reservoirs to be Expanded

Published Sep 6, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Researchers from two of the main campuses of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) are preparing to expand their study of 'químicos eternos' (forever chemicals) in Puerto Rico's rivers and reservoirs to new tributaries. The study aims to answer some of the many questions that persist about these compounds, which are associated with health damage.

This expansion comes amidst a global water crisis and a local drought that has worsened access to water. The UPR researchers are seeking to provide more information about the presence of these chemicals in the island's water sources.
