The organization Firmes, Unidos y Resilientes con la Abogacía (FURIA) went to court to demand information from the Municipality of Yauco about a 15-home project for families in the Ciénaga sector displaced by the January 2020 earthquakes, after the delivery date was missed for a second time. The project, called Villa Jireh, was originally promised for Christmas; Mayor Ángel Luis Torres Ortiz later said in June 2025 during a public event that families could move in by August, but that deadline also passed.
Attorneys Melanie Colón De Jesús and Nayda Bobonis, representing FURIA, said residents have formally requested since October 2025 to meet with the mayor to learn the project's status, causes of delays, and a completion timeline. Municipal attorney Sixto Quiñones reportedly said in June and July that the meeting couldn't be scheduled because the mayor was outside Puerto Rico.
Six years and eight months after the earthquakes, affected families—including elderly residents and people with health needs—remain in deteriorated temporary wooden modules atop a mountain, not designed to last over six years. Resident María Ayala said: "Estamos en plena época de huracanes y vivimos con miedo porque a estas alturas esas casitas de madera apenas aguantan un soplo."
