Puerto Rico will compete for the first time in the Serie de las Américas in 2027 while continuing its traditional participation in the Caribbean Series, confirmed Juan Flores Galarza, president of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente (LBPRC), in a phone interview with Primera Hora. This means the LBPRC will need to assemble two teams after the 2026-27 season ends: the season champion will represent Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Series, held February 1-7, 2027 at Estadio Fernando Valenzuela in Hermosillo, Mexico, while the runner-up will play in the Serie de las Américas, starting February 9, 2027 in Caracas, Venezuela.
The Serie de las Américas participation results from collaboration between the Confederación de Béisbol Profesional del Caribe (CBPC) and the Asociación de Béisbol de las Américas (ABAM). The tournament's third edition will feature 10 teams: the four CBPC members (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico) plus six ABAM countries (Colombia, Cuba, Curazao, Panama, Nicaragua, Argentina).
Both teams will be reinforced with additional players, as is customary. Flores Galarza noted the close timing between the two tournaments creates additional challenges for team assembly, particularly since players belonging to MLB organizations typically cannot participate due to spring training reporting deadlines, meaning MLB-affiliated players will likely be excluded from the Serie de las Américas.
