One month after the passing of former Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colón, his mother, Nieves Colón, shared an emotional message on social media. She accompanied and cared for her son for 11 years after he suffered brain damage during a boxing match in 2015. Prichard Colón died on August 13 at the age of 33, after struggling with severe neurological sequelae from the fight against American Terrel Williams.
Nieves Colón expressed that her heart still cannot understand how to live without her son and that his absence hurts deeply. She also stated that she will always treasure the 11 years of memories they shared. The funeral and burial of the former boxer took place in Winter Park, Florida, with his family inviting everyone to participate in a celebration of his life with music, joy, and memories.
The brain damage Prichard Colón suffered was caused by repeated blows to the back of his head and neck during the fight, and the referee, Joe Cooper, did not take action. After the fight, Colón was taken to a hospital in Fairfax due to vomiting and dizziness, and his boxing career ended with a record of 16-1.
