The Puerto Rico Senate's Committee on Innovation, Reform and Appointments, chaired by Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, held a public hearing to evaluate three judicial nominations submitted by Governor Jenniffer González Colón. The nominees are attorney Sarah I. Velilla Núñez, nominated as Municipal Judge of the Court of First Instance, and attorneys Celso Lorenzo Gutiérrez and Jannat K.
Ramos Román, nominated as Superior Judges of the Court of First Instance. Rivera Schatz noted that although all three are being nominated for a judicial post for the first time, none has been distant from the judicial system. Velilla Núñez, born in San Juan and raised in Bayamón, has 15 years of experience as an attorney.
She currently serves as a Legal Officer at the Court of Appeals, a position she has held in different periods since 2011 and continuously since January 2020. She has also served as legal division director for a public agency and as in-house counsel for a corporation, handling consumer protection compliance and representing the company before the Federal Trade Commission. In her testimony, she described the role of municipal judge as "the citizen's first point of contact with justice."
