Néstor Alonso Vega, a convicted former New Progressive Party (PNP) representative, is about a month from completing his prison sentence and has begun a new role in counseling. This came to light Friday via an official Instagram post from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Law School, Río Piedras campus, showing Alonso Vega alongside UPR employee and academic counselor Dalila Luyanda at an event at Tony's. The post described the gathering as an activity letting students share experiences and questions about the Law School's services, identifying Alonso Vega as a 'counselor-in-training.' It was the second such event, following one held Thursday, September 10.
UPR campus press spokesperson Lorna Castro told Primera Hora that Alonso Vega 'is not our employee' but was accompanying the counselor during the interactive activity, held several times per semester to support students. Castro said she preliminarily believed Alonso Vega is a student in UPR's counseling program but was seeking confirmation from the academic department. The post drew critical comments over UPR's association with Alonso Vega given his public corruption conviction, including one calling it an 'interesting selection' to share experiences with law students.
Primera Hora previously reported Alonso Vega is currently in a halfway house, set for release on October 25, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) records.
