According to Puerto Rico's Compañía de Turismo, nearly 2.7 million people stayed in hotels in Puerto Rico during fiscal year 2026, a 3.9% increase over the prior fiscal year and the highest guest figure on record. Hotel registrations have been rising for the past six years, following an 18.5% drop in fiscal year 2020 caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Between January and June 2026, registrations rose 3.1%, reaching 1.4 million people. Growth in hotel stays has been driven by non-residents: nearly 2.2 million non-resident guests stayed in hotels in fiscal year 2026, a 7.0% increase, the largest rise in the past four years.
Meanwhile, the number of resident guests staying in hotels fell 7.3%, marking the third consecutive decline and the lowest figure since 2020. The occupancy rate rose nearly three percentage points, from 69.9% in fiscal year 2025 to 72.7% in fiscal year 2026 — the highest rate since 2018, when it stood at 76.5%.
