Puerto Rico’s Institute of Statistics reports that the island’s aging index rose from 168 in 2020 to 237 in 2025, a 41% increase in five years, meaning there are now about 237 people age 65 or older for every 100 residents under 15. The index rose in all 78 municipalities, according to the Institute’s Report of Results 2025-2026.
Births fell 70% between 2000 and 2025, dropping from 59,460 to 18,003, and deaths have consistently outnumbered births since 2016, producing negative natural population growth. Dr. Orville M. Disdier Flores, executive director of the Institute, said the data reflect a Puerto Rico different from just a few years ago, and that an accelerating aging population with changing needs requires rethinking health services, elder care, and community development.
The Institute also estimated Puerto Rico’s population at 3,184,835 as of July 1, 2025, noting that most regions continue to lose working-age population. The findings are part of the Institute’s annual report documenting demographic changes, health conditions, economic statistics, and other social issues.
