Fay has regained tropical storm status in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). However, the system, the sixth of the season, is not expected to become a hurricane. The NHC forecasts that Fay will degrade back to a tropical depression by Saturday.
With winds of 40 miles per hour, Fay has been intensifying and weakening since last Saturday. The NHC attributes this to wind shear preventing it from becoming the first hurricane of the season. Fay is not expected to affect any territory as it moves far north of Puerto Rico.
Additionally, the NHC is monitoring an area of low pressure off the west coast of Africa, which has a high potential for cyclonic development in the next two days. This system is projected to move north and is not expected to affect the Caribbean. The low-pressure system is currently hundreds of miles southwest of the Cape Verde islands.
