Dentist Neyza Enid Garay Rivera started painting stones to spread messages of love and solidarity after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017. Initially, she intended to focus on oral health, but her brother suggested a more creative approach, leading to the concept of 'La Piedra Viajera PR'.
Garay Rivera added the 'PR' to create a recognizable symbol that would represent Puerto Rico wherever the stones traveled. She began painting stones daily and sharing photos on Facebook, along with instructions on how to participate.
The movement, which started on March 12, 2018, with family and friends, has grown to nearly 57,000 followers and continues to expand. The stones, which represent strength, resilience, and eternity, aim to bring joy and positive thoughts to those who receive them.
