Casa Pueblo, a self-management organization, led a water-based protest in iconic areas of New York, including near the Statue of Liberty, to demand that authorities work towards Puerto Rico's energy sovereignty. Arturo Massol Deyá, Casa Pueblo's executive director, stated that energy sovereignty is a necessary step towards Puerto Rico's free determination. The protest featured flags from Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Palestine, and several Puerto Rican municipalities.
Massol Deyá emphasized the need for decentralized, democratized, and community-driven energy solutions using clean and renewable sources. Casa Pueblo has developed over 400 solar installations in Adjuntas through its Adjuntas Pueblo Solar initiative. The organization is calling for immediate energy independence, rather than waiting until 2050 as stipulated by local law.
They also advocate for the cancellation of $6 billion worth of methane gas and temporary generation contracts.
