Nelsa López Colón, widow of former Governor Rafael Hernández Colón, questioned a ruling by Puerto Rico's State Elections Commission (CEE) on a complaint she filed after her personal data was allegedly used without authorization to register an electoral endorsement. In written statements released by her legal representative, Guillermo San Antonio Acha, López Colón said the CEE is failing to meet its legal obligation to protect voters' right to vote, calling it a "nefarious precedent for Puerto Rican democracy."
According to the communication, CEE President Jorge Rafael Rivera Rueda said the commission's plenary discussed on September 10 a motion López Colón filed on September 1 regarding complaint CEE-Q-24-001. López Colón stated in her motion that the Department of Justice notified her that its investigation concluded the facts constituted a crime, but found insufficient evidence to criminally prosecute a specific person due to deficiencies in the system used to collect electronic endorsements.
The CEE maintained it has not received an official determination from the Department of Justice on the investigation and that, for the Commission's purposes, the process continues.
