The immediate family of Daniel Rodríguez, 25, who died after suffering an accident while playing in a basketball tournament in Bayamón, says that two months later 'many gaps' remain in how the case has been handled. Relatives, including Cintrón, expressed concern that the Bayamón municipality might try to distance itself from responsibility by claiming the competition was not an official tournament, noting the municipality reportedly lacks a record of who was given the key to the court.
Cintrón said 48 teams paid a $500 registration fee and covered their own officiating costs, calling it an organized event rather than an informal game, and argued the municipality bears responsibility. Daniel's sister, Vianka Rodríguez, demanded answers from the ambulance company that responded, criticizing the delayed arrival, the alleged failure to intubate despite having equipment, and inconsistent explanations — including a claim the call was received between 4:00and 5:00 p.m., when her brother was reportedly still at work.
She questioned whether the company follows any agency-regulated protocol. Cintrón thanked the municipality for opening an investigation, hoping it will be thorough and also probe Santa Rosa Basketball League, and called for safety protocols, ambulance services, and insurance for community tournaments to prevent similar incidents.
