The Afro Museum Casa Silvana (MACAS) in Humacao, Puerto Rico, is the only museum in Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the Caribbean to be approved in the first phase of the international 'Sello y Trofeo Muriquinho' award for Anti-Racist Museums in Brazil. MACAS is a small, independent museum specializing in Afro-Puerto Rican and Afro-descendant art, located in the Mambiche Prieto neighborhood of Humacao.
The museum is among 74 Brazilian institutions and museums selected for the next round, including prominent Afro-Brazilian museums such as the Museo Afro Brasil Emanoel Araujo in São Paulo and the Museu Afro-Brasileiro in Salvador, Bahia. The selection process recognizes institutions that develop effective actions to combat racism and promote diversity, considering areas such as collections and research, curatorship, education, management, and community relations.
The international initiative is promoted by the Permanent Anti-Racist Committee of ICOM Brazil and the Kilombola Museology Network, in collaboration with the Institute of Research and Memory of New Black Peoples. Only 15 institutions from Brazil, Latin America, and the Caribbean will receive the Anti-Racist Museum Seal and the Trofeo Muriquinho award.
