A 20-year-old man, Yahir J. Sánchez Marrero, has been accused of providing false information to the police and malicious arson after simulating a carjacking to allegedly make an insurance claim. According to a police report, the incident occurred on September 21, 2026, when Sánchez Marrero reported being a victim of a carjacking while driving his 2015 Volkswagen Jetta on PR-872 in Bayamón.
However, during the investigation, Sánchez Marrero confessed to providing false information and admitted to setting his vehicle on fire to make an insurance claim. The case was investigated by the Division of Property Crimes, Robberies, and Frauds of the Bayamón Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC) and prosecutor Carmen Ortiz, who filed the corresponding charges. Sánchez Marrero appeared before Judge Carolina Guzmán of the Bayamón Tribunal, who determined cause for arrest and set a $30,000 global bond, which he posted. After being arraigned, he was released until the preliminary hearing date.
