El Nuevo Día published its last print edition on a recent Sunday, with the front page reading, "El papel termina. El periodismo continúa" ("Paper ends. Journalism continues").
The newspaper's first edition appeared 56 years ago, on May 18, 1970. GFR Media announced on September 21 that it would stop printing both El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora, ending an era for Puerto Rico's leading newspaper; Primera Hora's final print edition came out September 24. Guaynabo resident Ángel Muñiz criticized the shift, saying the press is leaning too heavily on technology when most of the population isn't tech-savvy, depriving people of a readable print daily.
Manatí resident José Carlos Burgos said he expects other newspapers to follow the same path. The union representing El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora workers said about 150 jobs were lost due to the closure of print operations. More than a dozen regional newspapers, distributed free in communities, will now have to find somewhere else to print their editions. GFR Media confirmed both publications will become 100% digital.
