According to Stanley Christodoulou, a judge and referee who worked on the Bernard Hopkins vs. Tito Trinidad fight, Hopkins had anticipated his victory over Trinidad. Christodoulou initially thought Trinidad would win, based on his previous victory over William Joppy on May 12, 2001, at Madison Square Garden. However, after a chance encounter with Hopkins in a New York hotel lobby, Christodoulou heard Hopkins say, 'Lo tengo medido.
Lo tengo medido. Le ganaré fácilmente
Le ganaré fácilmente' ('I've got him measured. I'll beat him easily'). Christodoulou wrote about this encounter in his 2019 memoir, The Life and Times of Stanley Christodoulou.
Hopkins ultimately fulfilled his prediction, taking control of the fight and winning by technical knockout in the 12th round to become the undisputed champion of the 160-pound division. The fight took place 25 years ago, on a day like today, at Madison Square Garden in New York.
